Usually, children wear school sweatshirts as part of their physical education uniform. However, this year the sweatshirt, a navy blue, pullover hoodie with school logo, is available to all, from 4-year-olds to adults.
Last spring, the Parents Council asked that the students submit designs for the logo. In June, Kevin Slattery, a sixth class student, was informed that his design had won. At a ceremony that month, Kathleen King, secretary of the Parents Council, presented Kevin with the first copy of the hoodie with his design on the upper left front.

Students had been given time in school to create their designs. Kevin knew what he wanted his design to contain. That part of the process was easy. Deciding on the layout was more difficult. When the class time was up, Kevin was only half done with the project and had to continue working on it at home.
Kevin’s design is in the shape of a crest. The top section of the crest shows Skeheenarinky School complete with the Scots pines and Galtee Mountains in the background. Even a bit of the shelter is included. Above the school is ’1858′, the year in which the school was built. Kevin included the date “so others would know”.
The lower half of the crest is divided into two sections. The blue section on the left shows an open book. Kevin explained that it symbolizes the learning that takes place at the school. The orange section on the right contains crossed hurleys and symbolizes the sports that the children are involved in through the GAA. Kevin went on to say that he chose blue and orange because they are the colours of the hurling club.
Beneath the crest is a wavy banner with the words Scoil Náisiúnta Sceichín a Rince. It finishes off the logo beautifully.
