Skeheenarinky Notes – January 5 2012

Joan Conway

By now everyone will have heard of the sad passing of Joan Conway just before Christmas. Joan was a great icon of Skeheenarinky life both during her years as proprietor at Jacksons pub and also since her retirement. The love and respect in which she was held by her friends and family is a testament to her great character. The community offers sincere condolences to her five daughters and their families. May she rest in peace.

Margaret Norris

With sadness we also note the passing of Margaret Norris (nee Hennessy) of Ardfinnan. Margaret was originally from Skeheenarinky and her mother – Mary Hennessy (nee Kent ) – was a teacher at the local school for about thirty years. Margaret was a recipient of a medallion as one of the oldest past-pupils at the School Anniversary weekend in 2008. We would like to extend our sympathy to Margaret’s family and extended family. May she rest in peace.

Community Alert

Reminder: Carbon Monoxide Alarms are available through Community Alert. If you are interested, contact a committee member. The next meeting will be held on Monday, January 23rd at which a guest speaker will instruct us on the use of pendant alarms and other security devices. All are welcome.

Santa Photos

The photos that were taken by Kay Caplice of the children visiting Santa at the Skeheenarinky National School Christmas party are well worth a look. The photos are now available for viewing on Skeheenarinky.com gallery, and once again, thanks to Kay and Kieran. What lovely memories for the children and their parents.

Wren Girls

The only ‘Wran Boys’ we saw this year were ‘Wren Girls’ Rebecca Connolly, and Niamh Curtin. It was great to see them and St. Stephen’s Day would not have been the same without them. Maybe next year we will see more Wren Boys and Girls which would ensure the continuance of the tradition in this area. It would be a great loss if it died out altogether. Well done to Rebecca and Niamh!

Mitchelstown Fire Brigade

A huge ‘thank you’ to firemen everywhere who keep us safe throughout the year. Special thanks to the Mitchelstown Fire Brigade who attended promptly at a chimney fire in this locality on New Year’s day. Their efficiency and skill ensured that the chimney fire did not expand into something more serious and demonstrated the training that firemen go through. We often take them for granted and perhaps we don’t say often enough “Well done to you all and thanks for being there!”
