The Avondhu
This is a notice to people who read the Skeheenarinky Notes in the Avondhu Newspaper. For some reason there has been an increasing number of mistakes in the printed version of the notes over the last few weeks. These mistakes are not as a result of Ed’s typing – the notes posted online (such as below) are a direct copy and paste of the version he sends me every week, and as can be seen there are never any mistakes. -Kieran
Tom O’Sullivan
On behalf of the Skeheenarinky area community we extend our sympathy to the wife and family of Clogheen’s Tom O’Sullivan who passed away recently. Tom was a well-known and very popular business man and, through his many business and social activities, had a wide circle of friends. He was also a founding and active member of the Friends of St. Teresa’s Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Mary, and family and the community at large. His passing leaves a void in the village of Clogheen. May he rest in peace.
O’Keefe house and photo
A recent renovation project on the property of Ollie and Helen Reilly in Banard, Coolagaranroe, uncovered a fascinating link with the past. During the renovation, a 1934 Papal blessing was discovered in the names of Mr. and Mrs. William O’Keefe. As a small derelict house nearby is known as O’Keefes we wonder if any information on the family is out there. If so, we would gladly receive any information.
Christmas Card Game
1st. Danny Sullivan & Teresa Carroll. 2nd and 3rd shared by Kitty Butler & Mary Connolly, Fr. Flynn & James Fox and Hannah Luddy & Breda Fox. Lucky Tables: Brigid O’Brien & Hopper McGrath, Eily Conway & Una McGrath. Raffle: Eddie O’Gorman, John O’Connor, John Sherlock, Mary Hyland. The organisers of the Thursday card game expect that a small piece of history was made at this Christmas event as card-players from ten different counties sat down to play on the evening. Limerick, Tipp, Cork, Kerry, Clare, Waterford, Monaghan, Cavan, Wexford and Meath.
Hospice Card Game
Thanks to all who supported the Hospice Game at Jacksons on Sunday 8th January. Special thanks to players and to sponsors of all the spot prizes. Seanie would also like to thank all his helpers on the day. Thanks also to Mary Kennedy, Tony Austin and Grace Meaney. There was a record amount of tables – fourteen – at this game and €1505 was raised for South Tipp Hospice. A huge thank-you also to those winners who very generously donated their winnings back to the funds for this worthy charity.
National School Trip to Panto
The third annual Parents’ Association sponsored trip to the Pantomime in Cork Opera House was a great success this year as in other years. The trip was open not just to pupils at the school but also to the pupils’ pre-school siblings and parents. The large bus was filled to capacity and the exuberance of the children when they arrived back demonstrated just how much they enjoyed their trip to ‘Cinderella’.
Defibrillator Training
Many thanks to those who have signed up for defibrillator training or re-training at Skeheenarinky. We need several more names and hope you will sign up for this worthwhile programme. Contact Seanie Crotty on 086 3984970 for further details.
Skeheenarinky Birthdays
Happy Birthday greetings this week go to two Skeheenarinky ladies – Karol DeFalco and Catherine Walsh. We trust that both ladies will celebrate the day in fitting style.
Poc Fada
In spite of the inclement weather on St. Stephen’s Day, twenty teams of three took part in this year’s Skeheenarinky Hurling Club ‘Poc Fada’. The teams played from Lynch’s Cross to Ballyporeen. Anne Casey greeted the teams back at Ballyporeen with some of her famous home-made soup which was hugely welcomed. The proceeds of the event were donated to South Tipperary Hospice. Well done to all involved.
Juvenile GAA Table Quiz
The Juvenile GAA Table Quiz on the 29th December was a great success with seventeen tables participating. A huge thank you to all those who turned up on what was a very enjoyable evening and we look forward to an even bigger turnout at next year’s quiz.
Juvenile GAA League
The Ballyporeen/Skeheenarinky Juvenile GAA Club is organising a Parish League at juvenile level in both hurling and football. This is the first such league in many years. More information on teams etc, in these notes next week.
