Active Skeheenarinky AED Group

I am delighted to be able to clarify the position regarding the (AED) defibrillator in Skeheenarinky. Jim O’Brien of Ballyporeen who has given magnificent voluntary service over the years and who has been actively involved in AED installation, maintenance, training of operatives etc. over the years, assures me that the machine at Skeheenarinky is checked on a regular basis, has new batteries and pads fitted at the exact specified intervals, and is in perfect working order. Jim says that if someone in your home or workplace collapses, the first thing you should do is call 112 or 999 and ask for an ambulance. The people at ambulance control will, if they have the information, call a responder. Members of the public who are not trained as responders should not go to the machine. (Only trained responders who have the code for the keypad can access the machine.) There are approximately 10 -12 trained first responders in Skeheenarinky at the moment and their certificates are up-to-date and they are insured. I apologise if the information I was given for last week’s article inferred otherwise. The information was possibly based on the fact that of the 30 people from the parish who agreed to retrain in Ballyporeen earlier this year, only 11 showed up. Training and re-certification for the Skeheenarinky Group will be organised at Skeheenarinky for the New Year. Details here later. Jim is happy to clarify any of these matters at 052 67446. I have also had a call to say that in some other areas, local groups have an emergency AED mobile phone with publicly known number. The holder of the phone always knows who is on call and the ‘holder’ can change as circumstances such as holidays etc. dictate.

Just Garret

At the Royal College of Surgeons recently, Garret FitzGerald’s autobiography ‘Just Garret’ was launched by Taoiseach Enda Kenny. Among the guests on the evening were Kathleen King of Upper Skeheenarinky and Karol DeFalco. Included in the book is a great photo of Garret with President Ronald Reagan. It has been said before, but what an amazing claim to fame for this parish – to have been the ancestral home of a Taoiseach of Ireland and a President of the U.S.A.

Christmas Tree Man

We are lucky in Skeheenarinky to have the Christmas season begin early each year when the Christmas Tree Farm opens its doors to the public. A visit to the Christmas Tree Farm in Skeheenarinky has become as much a part of Christmas as Turkey and Plum Pudding! Don’t forget to try the non-alcoholic punch! They now have a Facebook page: Caplice Christmas Tree Farm. Nice Christmas fun.

Burncourt Christmas Craft Fair

Just managed a fleeting visit to Burncourt Craft Fair on Sunday. The place was a hive of activity and everyone was having a good time. Nice to meet old friends and see all the Christmas cheer around the place. It looked like the stalls had plenty of customers. Well done, Burncourt!

Condolences

We offer sincere sympathy to the Fitzgibbon family of Coolroe on the recent passing of Eily’s sister, Peggy Ryan. Peggy had been, for a long number of years, housekeeper to the late Fr. Ryan, Parish Priest of Quinn, Co. Clare. May she rest in peace.

Exciting Times at Ballyporeen GAA Club

Congratulations to all involved in the recent Celebrity Bainisteoir competition. The result of the big game might have been slightly disappointing for the players and club officials after all their hard work, but the lead up to the big day and the occasion itself will be recorded as great successes in the club’s history.
