Skeheenarinky Gala Weekend a wonderful success in beautiful sunshine.

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

Skeheenarinky’s Gala Weekend proved to be a smashing success, thanks to a gorgeous day and immense support from family, friends, and neighbours. In particular, the parents’ association would like to thank all of our sponsors, Seamus Fox for the use of his field for parking, the parents and friends who helped with various events on the day, Ed O’Riordan and Karol DeFalco for the memory photos, the teams who participated in some great matches, and the stewards and gatekeepers who kept the traffic and people flowing. Thanks also go to Catherine O’Donnell for hosting  a lovely coffee morning/afternoon for our community.

The gala weekend, aside from providing a fun day our for the family, highlights the tremendous support Skeheenarinky National School has from its local and surrounding communities. Thank you to all involved.

Mystery Solved

Concerns over potentially nefarious drone activity in Skeheenarinky can be put to rest as John McGrath and his brother Kieran have come forth as the owners of the mysterious contraption/toy. John and Kieran have assured me that they were merely testing the distance capability of their new, favourite gadget on the two occasions they flew it in Skeheenarinky. Fortunatly, they were not casing their neighbours’ homes and would caution any miscreant attempting to use a drone in such a fashion, as drones are considerably louder and more conspicuous that your professional cat, or even amateur, burglar might prefer, In fact, John and Kieran have used the drone to take some stunning photographs of the Fermoy Viaduct and the Vee. Feel free to contact either brother if you would like any aerial photography done.

Brilliant Steps

Congratulations to all of the Irish stepdancers from Scóil Rince na Trí Chontae, especially our own Katie Kelly, for brilliant work at the grade exams held by Múinteoirí Rince Chúigí na hÉireann in Limerick last Sunday. The exams were a great success, with all dancers passing their respective grades. Well done!

Generous Donation

Special thanks go to Glengarra Utd. Soccer Club for its support of our local schools.

Glengarra Utd. Soccer Club played in the Avondhu North Cork Soccer League for over three years. Unfortunately, due to the clubs in the league being unable to field teams, this league came to an end over two years ago.

Glengarra Utd. has decided to donate the funds from their club to the two local, national schools of Skeheenarinky and Burncourt. The sum of €1,038.24 was presented to Tom Maher and Susan Walsh of the Parents’ Association at Skeheenarinky National School by former chairperson, Lily White, and treasurer, Eamon Walsh.

Contact Eileen Reilly at 0862177471 or with your stories from the village. Please submit your news by 8 PM on Sunday.

Hurling Champions

Congratulations to Skeheenarinky National School’s team, who won the Co. U-13 7 aside Cumunn na mbunscol hurling final on Wednesday, June 18th, at Semple Stadium. The team played brilliantly and were a credit to both the school and their trainer, Eddie Maher. Please read Eddie’s account of the match in the sports section.

Gala Weekend for Skeheenarinky School

Fine weather and some energetic team work helped ensure another successful Gala Weekend this year. It was all-go all weekend as the card game, coffee morning, Bingo and Gala Day were all well-attended.

The football matches on Sunday resulted in wins for Kilbehenny in the U-6 match, Clogheen in the U-8 match, and a draw between the Galtee Gaels and Ballyporeen in Ladies’ football. A host of races highlighted the fitness of children and parents alike (see for the complete list of results). The competitions finished with a tug-of-war, with Grague defeating Ballylooby and Killenaule in a serious show of strength.

Special thanks go to all those who supported the weekend’s events, especially to the volunteers who kept things running smoothly throughout it all.

Skeheenarinky Fundraising Cycle & More.

Fundraising Cycle
Despite the torrent of rain and wind, a hardy group of cycling
enthusiasts participated in the fundraising cycle to support
Skeheenarinky National School on Saturday, 26 April. An impressive
twenty-four took part in the 130km route, which included the Vee:
cyclists were met with heavy rain on their ascent, only to be followed
by a rainbow on their descent. One cyclist commented that
Skeheenarinky’s 130km route was “great training” for the Malin to
Mizen cycle this June Bank Holiday weekend. Although there was little
hope of the weather’s improving, twenty-one individuals took part in
the 50km route later that morning, and thirty people (mostly students)
completed the 7km family cycle. Students participating showed fierce
dedication to their school as they faced the challenge of a heavy
downpour on their return from Glengarra Woods.
While the physical exertion to complete the cycle was impressive,
there was much work behind the scenes to bring this event to fruition.
Kieran, Anthony, and Kay Caplice headed the organisation of this
cycle, ensuring the well-planned routes, the safety of the cyclists on
the routes, and the overall fluidity with which the event occurred.
Kay was out on the routes taking pictures of the cyclists and has
dedicated an album entitled “The Dedicated and the Brave” to them on
her photography page; Anthony was participating in the 130km cycle;
and Kieran was at the school keeping the event on course. Tremendous
thanks goes to the Caplice family for their dedication to the school
and the running of this event and to the Skeheenarinky National
School’s Parents’ Association, who made an incredible feast to
replenish the cyclists.  Special thanks also go to the many others who
made this cycle possible, safe and pleasant– even with the
inopportune weather. Among these were the St. John’s ambulance service
from Glanmire in Co. Cork, the gardaí from Cahir, Skeheenarinky
National School’s Board of Management, the marshals, those working the
food stops, the drivers in the lead and sweep cars, our friends and
neighbours at the Kilbehenny Community Centre who donated cups,
tables, and the sound system, Roche’s Cycles in Mitchelstown for
donating repair materials, Fermoy Print & Design for donating lovely
certificates, parents of SNS students who baked and helped out on the
day, Mrs. Doyle and Miss Connolly who managed registration, and the
cyclists themselves. Thank you to those who made donations to the
fundraiser despite not cycling in the event. Some passersby even gave
donations for the school to the marshals. There was a feeling of
tremendous support for the cycle and the school.
Although the weather may have diminished the numbers participating in
this fundraiser, it did not diminish the overall spirit of the event.
All who participated, from the cyclists to the organisers and
volunteers, kept an upbeat outlook, bolstered by a bit of banter and
craic. Well done, Skeheenarinky!

Gala Day and Teacher’s Retirement

Friday, August 7th, 2009

This year’s annual Parents’ Council Gala Day went off without a hitch yet again. The weather was great, there was lots to eat and drink, the children had great fun, and best of all we had no thunder and lightning like last year’s Anniversary!
