The book, Hard
Days and Happy Days, which is to be published by the
National School Anniversary Committee as part of the Skeheenarinky National
School 150th Anniversary Celebration, includes the
following:
A foreword written by former Taoiseach Dr.
Garret FitzGerald who will be present to launch the book on
the 20th June. Dr. Fitzgerald's grandfather, Patrick
Fitzgerald, emigrated from Skeheenarinky to England in the
mid nineteenth century. Karol
DeFalco and Ed O'Riordan assisted Dr. Fitzgerald in his search
for his roots.
A preliminary chapter will document
education in the area prior to the building of the National
School. Hedge Schools in Skeheenarinky, Coolagaranroe,
Kiltankin etc., are listed.
A map and an interesting
section on townland placenames and their meanings as well as
subdivisions within those townlands.
Extracts from the 1938
Folklore Commission Schools Project. This project took
place in the 1930s when school children recorded information
on local folklore by interviewing the older people in their
school districts. The names and ages of the older
people are also recorded.
The landlords of Galtee Castle. Who were
the Brogdens, the Buckleys, and the Irish Land Company? Some fascinating information that
